Composer: Witold Lutoslawski
Album: String Quartet
Work Featured: String Quartet
Ensemble: Kronos Quartet
Label: Elektra Nonesuch 79255-2

This is one of the finest recordings of Witold Lutoslawski's only string quartet.  This piece was composed in 1964 and is quite possibly the pinnacle of Lutoslawski's compositional voice.  The music is highly expressive, quite lyrical and just jumps right out at the listener.

Lutoslawski employs a controlled improvisatory technique which he called aleatoric counterpoint.  This technique is an off-shoot of the aleatoric compositions of John Cage.  Lutoslawski did not completely embrace the free nature of Cage's music, but he adopted some of its principles.  The result gives the performers the ability to play their parts ad lib with the only limitation being time brackets.  Yet, somehow, through all of this potential chaos, the music unfolds and shows a clear, dramatic form that leaps off the page.
